Abstract:

This article analyzes the concept of Person and Non-Person among the E’ñepá (Panare) Indian people of the Venezuelan Amazon1. A whole set of other concepts are linked to the notions of Person and Non-Person: humanity, subjectivity, the identity of beings, the idea of what is different and what is the same. These categories are not material in nature, and are rather processes and relations. The author analyzes the different types of Person occurring in the world of the E’ñepá, discusses the process by which humanity is created and sustained, how communities are formed and their security maintained, and examines the relationship of the E’ñepá to the wider world of Others
