Immigrants and Basque Nationalism

Katarzyna Mirgos

Abstract

The present article concerns the issue of Basque immigration and the image of “the stranger”. It also reflects upon the historical and contemporary position of immigrants and their role in Basque nationalism. The author’s field research, conducted in 2005–2009, is used to observe the change in the way “strangers” have been perceived by Basques, and to assess the accuracy of the hypothesis that an increasing influx of foreign¬ers and the emergence of a “multicultural Basque Country” may solve the problem of Basque nationalism.
