CFP 70th volume of Etnografia Polska

2026-03-04

In 2026, the 70th volume of Etnografia Polska, a scholarly journal published by Instytut Archeologii i Etnologii PAN (Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences), will appear. We intend to mark these seven decades with a jubilee issue. This anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the trajectory of Polish ethnology and socio-cultural anthropology: its research idiom, history, institutional frameworks, and the changing conditions under which ethnography is practiced.

Etnografia Polska has long been a venue for texts grounded in fieldwork, based on sustained research and careful analytical engagement with empirical material. At the same time, its pages have featured articles responding to ongoing social and political processes, seeking to grasp emerging phenomena, methodological challenges, tensions, and crises. What unites these contributions is a shared commitment to ethnography as a mode of inquiry that demands methodological self-awareness, precision of description, and interpretive responsibility.

We invite submissions of articles that:

- reflect on the history of the journal and its role in shaping the discipline,

- analyse transformations in ethnographic practice and field relations,

- diagnose contemporary challenges facing ethnography in Poland (institutional, epistemological, ethical),

- offer reflections on the future of ethnography as a research practice and a form of knowledge,

- present findings from current fieldwork that illuminate new configurations of locality, community, power, economy, or technology.

We welcome both synthetic and problem-oriented texts, as well as empirically grounded articles—provided they move beyond description and make a substantive analytical contribution. We hope the 70th volume will become a space for a conversation about the condition and future of ethnography: its possibilities, limitations, and responsibilities.

For the sections Chronicle and Discussions, we also invite shorter contributions addressing the situation of academic journals in Poland (including Etnografia Polska), transformations in publishing and evaluation systems, and reflections on the role of ethnographers in public, academic, and local contexts. We welcome both analytical commentaries and well-argued polemical interventions.

On the occasion of the jubilee, we additionally encourage the submission of photographs documenting moments from the past seventy years of Polish ethnography: from fieldwork, seminars, conferences, archival work, or the everyday life of institutes and departments. We are interested in both “official” images and more informal photographs capturing the atmosphere of research practice. A selection (approx. 20–30 photographs) will be published in the Chronicle section; should financial constraints arise, a broader selection will be presented in the online version of the journal.

Deadline for article submissions: 30 April 2026
Deadline for other texts and photographs: 30 September 2026
Planned publication of the volume: end of 2026
