Abstract

Polish discourses on cultural heritage problems are dominated by issues related to the difficult past – the events of World War II, the period of real socialism, the legacy of Jewish or German culture. On the other hand, many of its local varieties require analysis in the context of cultural changes taking place today. This is an uninterrupted process that has been ongoing in Poland since the change of the political, economic and social system after 1989, and accelerated after Poland's accession to the European Union in 2004. To illustrate local problems, an example of a small town in Lesser Poland was chosen, where the problems of systemic transformation are focused as if through a lens and ideas and values disseminated in global circulation clash with local traditions. From the wide range of local dilemmas, controversies around the heritage of the urban past have been coming to the fore for several years, which are clearly revealed in the context of development strategies and local memory. In this article I analyse how local development strategies influence the attitude towards the past and the process of creating heritage, shaping community and local identity, including defining oneself in terms of rurality or urbanity.
