ANSWERING THE QUESTION, HAVE WE EVER BEEN POSTMODERN?

Michał Mokrzan

Abstract

The starting point of the reflection presented in the article is the following question formulated by Katarzyna Kaniowska in the late 1990s: “Have we ever been postmodern; will we ever be, at least we, the anthropologists”? The author assumes that the question did not become obsolete, and judging by the opinions shared by Polish anthropologists at the turn of the century, saying that such research approaches as: cultural critique, ethnographic surrealism, multi-sided ethnography, interpretive anthropology and dialogical ethnography represented postmodern reflection, it is required to reframe the problem afresh. Responding negatively to the title question, the author argues that these approaches have little in common with postmodernism. Therefore, it is not postmodernism has become the subject of increased attention of Polish anthropologists in the 1990s, but ideas of modernism regarded as postmodern.
