Abstract

The article explains the notion of the architectural model, tracing its origin and the practice of its application in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The custom of preparing such models was introduced in Poland by Italian architects, and might have been reinforced by German builders. Models were known since the 16th c., and they were probably made much more often than might be suggested by the few surviving samples from the 18th c., representing the tower domes of St Anne’s collegiate church in Cracow, the facade of the Cathedral in Poznań and the church in Szalowa.
