Abstract

The late-Renaissance burial chapels roofed with cupolas, founded in the seventeenth century by the Kochanowski and Owadowski (Wołucki) families beside the Zwoleń
church, are usually assessed in the light of the epitaphs preserved in the older one (the Chapel of St. Francis). However, our knowledge about their functioning as a necropolis is limited. The identity and approximate number of persons buried in the crypts of both chapels had been determined on the basis of the available death certificates dating from the years 1695–1800. This made it possible to delineate the role and function of old family foundations in the new conditions of the late eighteenth century.
