Publishers of modern advertising. Establishment of the advertising industry in Gdańsk at the turn of the twentieth century

Abstract

In the 19th century, the advertising industry established in Europe and United States.
Companies started to offer services resembling today’s marketing campaigns. This phenomenon was also present in Gdańsk at the twenieth century. The article presents the development of the advertising industry in Gdańsk, using, among others, records and advertisements contained in city address books from the second half of the 19th
and early 20th centuries. The marketing tools and methods used were pointed out, and the sources of the discussed practices were recognised. The presence and wide diversification of advertising initiatives in Gdańsk were highlighted. The transformations in the advertising industry in the city during the period in question were presented.
