Abstract

This study presents the specialist equipment of the workshops of Kalisz goldsmiths active from around the mid-16th to the late 18th century. It has been reconstructed on the basis of previously unused probate inventories and wills recorded in the town books of Kalisz which—given the complete absence of guild records—constitute the primary source of information on early modern goldsmithing in the city. An analysis of these sources and a comparison of their entries with analogous materials from other Polish goldsmithing centres already examined made it possible to identify the basic set of tools used by Kalisz goldsmiths and, consequently, to determine the techniques they employed and the range of products they offered.
