The furnishings of a burgher apartment in Warsaw in the years 1864-1914

Aleksander Łupienko

Abstract

The article results from the author’s research on Warsaw tenement houses in the years 1864–1918 viewed as an architectural type and a socio-economical phenomenon. It describes the furnishings of different kinds of rooms in middle-size and large apartments on the basis of memoirs and press articles. A separate section is devoted to room decoration. The paper is intended as a guide to the richness and complexity of Warsaw apartments from more than a century ago, as viewed by authors of contemporary relations. Therefore, the descriptions are not exhaustive but limited to those kinds of furniture and decorations that were mentioned in the analysed written sources.
