Abstract

The aim of the article is the analysis of changes in time perception among the members of two rural communities in Poland on the basis of ethnographic research. The point of departure of the analysis was the assertion of the interviewees that the members of the communities have less time for social interaction than 20-50 years before (it concerns older research participants, around 50-70 years of age). It happens despite ongoing mechanization of agriculture and of household chores, which should spare time. I try to explain this phenomenon referring to changes in agriculture and also to studies on changes in experiencing time in the postmodern era, resulting in a presentist orientation and the impression of time acceleration. I assert that this phenomenon is influenced by an intensive modernization of the countryside, among that the social and economic differentiation of rural dwellers, the influence of new media and consumerist aspirations are particularly significant.
