Abstract

The research paper describes Šuto Orizari, a district of Skopje where the ethnic majority is Roma. I place my analysis beyond the popular clichés used in interpretations of Roma neighbourhoods, which are limited
to romanticising and marginalising the community. I attempt to show that the phenomenon of Romani architecture, as a consequence of multi-level discrimination by a majority society, has become the backbone
of social emancipation.
