Abstract

Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890) documented the folklore of the territories of the former Commonwealth of Poland. In his lifetime, he produced 33 volumes of Lud and Obrazy etnograficzne. More than 20 regional monographies from his archives were published after his death. Field notes, articles and correspondence
confirm the multicultural character of the areas he researched. They also confirm Kolberg’s attitude towards the co-existence of cultures. He accepted cultural diversity and saw it as an inherent feature of Poland’s multi-ethnic and multicultural political nation. Material recorded by Kolberg is greatly valued and used not
only in Poland but also in the Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania.
