Socialistická Bratislava – premeny fyzického a sociálneho priestoru mesta

Juraj Janto

Abstract

The study focuses on the transformation in social and physical space of Bratislava which occurred after socialism was established in 1948. These changes had their parallels in other historical periods and in other countries. The author claims that the new communist government sought to bring about changes in the four categories, namely, it tried: (1) to legitimize its power in the history of the city and connect it with acceptable past; (2) to involve the city in the current social changes and processes; (3) to appropriate the physicalspace of the city; and (4) to restructure the city’s population. These intentions had their concrete and specific manifestations in the capital of Slovakia
