Abstract

The article analyses popular festivals held in the Parks of Culture and Recreation, a phenomenon characteristic of the Soviet culture. It describes the main features of Soviet popular festivals as forms of the communist upbringing, as a theatrical medium, and as a method of reinforcing the values of the Soviet state in the citizens’ awareness. The article analyses the transformations which took place in popular festivals in the days of the USSR: from their transformation into dramatised and ideologised celebrations of the Soviet holidays to the resurgence of the carnival element and the aspirations to freedom in them
