Abstract

The article is an attempt to describe the transformation process undergone by the image of the biblical Garden of Eden. Apart from the text of Genesis 2:4b–3:24, biblical references to Eden are little known. Being a Bible scholar, the author of the article examines this issue from the theological and biblical perspective. Among the symbolic elements of Eden that appear in other biblical texts, a major role is played by the images of a river, fruit trees and the tree of life. These symbols appear together, in various configurations, in Ez 47:1-2 and Rev 22:1-2. From the biblical perspective, a return to the lost Eden is possible. However, the symbol of Eden is closely related to the eschatological message of the Bible. In the eschatological new Jerusalem, a paradise garden, the symbol of eternal felicity, is located in the centre of the city
