A clay figurine of Christ Crucified from the second half of the 15th. c - the 16th. c. from the excavations in the Old Town in Stargard

Iwona Wojciechowska

Abstract

The article is devoted to a ceramic image of Christ Crucified revealed during excavations in the former district IX of the Old Town in Stargard. The clay figurine, dated to the second half of the 15th c.–the 16th c., was found in an early-modern-period latrine on one of building plots. Revealing a religious artefact in an area quite far from any sacred place indicates that the figurine was used by the inhabitants of the town in everyday individual religious practice. This kind of piety, based on a human being’s yearning for a direct contact with the sacred, involved owning devotional items. The find from Stargard belongs to one of the most numerous groups of devotional images in figural ceramics. Figurines of this type were usually parts of home altars. The style and craftsmanship of this representation of the Passion suggests that it was produced by a specializeworkshop in the Netherlands. Similar luxury imports had earlier been found in Stargard and should be linked to the fact that the town was a member of the Hanseatic League.
