Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present an image of the Third Reich through the eyes of a delegation from the Central Institute of Physical Education (CIWF) in Warsaw, which was in the capital of Nazi Germany during the Olympic Games in 1936, as part of the International Camp and Congress of Physical Education. The authors used a report on the CIWF
delegation’s trip to Berlin by Tadeusz Jakubowski, collected in the archives of the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. An analysis of the source document showed that the Polish participants were impressed and at times enthusiastic about the organisation, infrastructure, transport and public mobilisation during the Berlin Games. In the light of the report, a visit to the German capital during the biggest sports festival seems to have had positive overtones, and some organisational and architectural solutions even aroused the envy of the Polish students. They were delighted by the atmosphere of Olympic Berlin and did not see the negative aspects of the totalitarian state during the Games.
