Abstract

The article presents the conceptual and methodological framework of an ethnographic research project. Its area is the Józef Montwiłł-Mirecki modernist housing estate in Łódź. Its social and cultural specificity (history, architecture, memories and experiences of the inhabitants) made the category of dissonance of heritage the main research problem. The text is an attempt to transpose the concept of “dissonance” from the theory of music and heritage into the architectural context, proposing the term “difficult architecture”, which has a heuristic value in the case of the housing estate under study, but also shows the possibility of
application in other places. The article additionally shows a methodological model of research, the subject of which was the valorization of the estate (including its architecture) among its inhabitants. The contemporary difficulty and ambivalence of this architecture are affected by the specificity of interwar modernism, the influence of intellectual movements such as Red Vienna or the idea of cooperativism, and finally by the local context of Łódź itself; for this reason they have been sketchily operationalized in this article.
