Abstract

The social tasks of museums are not limited to collecting, preserving and presenting collections. Museums are also an element that shapes collective memory and a place for community integration; they also have the means to improve the well-being of their surroundings. Urban museums have a special responsibility related to their direct relationship with the immediate neighborhood and their potential to explain the processes accompanying urban development. The numerous participatory projects, as well as cooperation with the community in the creation of selected temporary exhibitions, serve as evidence of the growing awareness of city museum staff. Probably the least cooperation with communities is manifested in the creation and operation of permanent exhibitions. The text will focus on the example of the “Cracow from the beginning, without end” permanent exhibition at the Museum of Cracow, which has been designed to generate interaction with communities and comment on urban reality together with them.
