Pomniki bez cokołów – realizacje przedstawiające mężczyzn

Grażyna Ewa Karpińska

Abstract

In the current text I describe the cultural contexts of selected monuments, concentrating on memorial sculptures with a male subject. I am not interested in monuments which stand entirely against the current of contemporary art, that is those which are monumental and consist of a statue on a plinth. Instead, I focus on memorial sculpture integrated into city life and on entirely non-monumental monuments: ones without plinths, growing straight from pavements and representing life-size men in natural poses. Such monuments demonstrate some leading thematic variants and formal conventions. The fundamental and most popular variant of their design is the statue of a man sitting on a bench, in a chair or an armchair, or standing in a relaxed pose on the pavement. Such sculptures are usually memorials of notable personages, although increasingly often they represent also “ordinary” people shown in natural poses and at everyday activities, which refer to the local history and local tales of the “commonplace”, daily life experiences of the area’s residents
