Abstract

The emergence of national states and establishing the Polish-Czech border on the Olza River was a consequence of World War I which concerned the inhabitants of Cieszyn Silesia. As a result, the region known as Zaolzie, which lies on the west bank of the Olza and is inhabited by Polish autochthons, was incorporated into Czechoslovakia. Currently this region is witnessing a symbolic „self-identification war” concerning the meanings ascribed by various communities to certain spaces, and thus also to history, historical figures and artefacts. This social process is apparent in the public discourse, in which negotiations of identity (e.g during the preparations for the national census) and outright conflicts concerning symbolic domination between the Polish autochthon minority and the Czech majority (e.g. raising memorials, publishing maps) are evident
