Abstract

The edited material was created as a result of actions undertaken by Jan Zamoyski as a royal envoy to the Sambor starostwo. It is divided into two parts. In the first, written
in Latin and taken by the creator of the Inventory... probably from earlier, unpreserved sources, particular types of dues (capita) — administrative penalties and fees — were characterized with justification for collecting them (causae). The second part, written in Polish, is a practical supplement to the previous one: it calculates how many fees have been collected in a given village and how much remained to be enforced. The Inventory… shows the specific legal customs prevailing in the second half of the
sixteenth century in the starostwo. It is possible to find local trends, but also elements of the Wallachian, Ruthenian and Polish customary laws.
