Abstract

The starting point for the article is the concept that architecture is a social idea that shapes the material and symbolic world, expresses values and affects people, their emotions and actions. The text discusses the contemporary local reception of the Józef Montwiłł-Mirecki modernist housing estate in Łódź (1928–1931) using the term “difficult architecture”. The subject of the analysis are the materials collected during ethnographic research, the results of which show on specific dimensions and examples what is the dissonance of modernist architecture, its difficulty and ambivalence, and thus indicate the dissonance of heritage as a process and an active attitude towards the past.
