Abstract

In 1913 the Centennial Exhibition was organized in Wrocław. One of the elements of the enormous exhibition complex was the “Congolese village” (German: Kongodorf), built on the grounds of the amusement park. The aim of this article, based on a critical analysis of the plan of the “Negro village” (German: Negerdorf) and an architectural and construction drawing, is to present the fate, structure and significance of this small area, where ethnographic shows (German: Völkerschauen) were held for several months. I am particularly interested in the deconstruction of these two historical documents produced within the framework of specific power and socio-spatial relations, asking questions about the type of knowledge-power thus produced and communicated.
