Abstract

The aim of the article is to describe the formation of the art and antiques market in Kraków in the nineteenth century. Although the city could not compete with Warsaw in economic terms, various forms of the art trade have been present there since the beginning of the century. The paper details and describes selected phenomena typical for the nineteenth-century art market: antiquarian trade, public auctions, picture lotteries, activities of selected bookstores and shops offering works of art, and finally first professional art salons operating in Krakow. The study is based on the archival material, correspondence, press sources, diaries and memoirs, as well as guide books.
