A noblewoman’s court in the light of household registers and estate registers from the early 18th century: the court of Teresa Zamoyska née Potocka

Bożena Popiołek

Abstract

This article presents the organisation of the court of a member of an important magnate family, Teresa Zamoyska née Potocka, wife of the ordynat (heir to the fee tail estate) and starost of Płoskirów Tomasz Józef Zamoyski. The paper attempts to reconstruct the structure, membership, and economic basis of a female court at the beginning of the 18th century based on estate registers, servants’ accounts, and records of court expenses and revenues. It also presents the profile of Potocka herself (who was born before 1667 and died in 1713) and her changing situation after each of two marriages.
