Abstract

The author discusses the question of trade and exchange in the main centres of the Piast state on the example of Wrocław. The course of trade routes in the region is revised based on new data, including a reconstruction of how these routes changed in the period from the 10th to the 1st half of the 13th c. Also addressed is the role of trade in the formation of Wrocław itself, which according to the common view was established as a stronghold at the intersection of long-distance routes, but which also acted as a stimulus for the development of local and supralocal road transit. The analysis covers objects related to goods exchange and strives to locate the sites where this exchange could have taken place. The economic transformation of the Wrocław stronghold and its hinterland is shown on the basis of various categories of finds, such as silver hoards, coins, scales, weights, etc.
