Abstract

The article briefly presents the development of industrial archaeology, a scientific discipline that analyzes the material traces of industrialization. It discusses its definitions, chronological and thematic scope, research methods, and social significance. The main stages of its development are also indicated. While the beginnings of industrial archaeology go back to the 1980s, it is still a developing science in Poland combining methods from various fields: archaeology, history of technology, urban planning, and heritage protection. Despite difficulties such as a lack of central coordination, low public awareness of the value of industrial heritage, and insufficient legal protection of sites, it is gaining importance as a tool for reconstructing the past and actively supporting the revitalization of post-industrial spaces.
