FORWARD TO THE PAST! HISTORICAL REENACTMENT BETWEEN HISTORY AND PRESENT

Kamila BARANIECKA-OLSZEWSKA

Abstract

Historical reenactment can be analyzed both as a method of cognizing the past and as a contemporary phenomenon reflecting needs and attitudes of presently living people. The article shows tension between past and present which is inherently inscribed in historical reenactment. Presenting reenactors’ daily struggles with anachronisms the author agrees with the idea that reenacting the past can tell us more about the present. Moreover, she depicts relations of reenactment to the present as an important subject for anthropological interpretation and outlines directions of such analysis which can contribute to the understanding of a role of representations of history in contemporary culture
