Abstract

On the basis of archival documents, including those from the Archives of the Zamoyski Estate in Zwierzyniec, the article sketches a range of issues related to budziarze settlements in the Solska Forest in the southern part of the region of Lublin. Budziarze (~hutters) lived in that area from the mid-18th c. to the first half of the 19th c. Originating from local peasantry, they dealt in forest trades such as wood-tar production, later turning also to farming small fields and pastures, breeding and bee-keeping. The article discusses the origin and development of these settlements and explores their location on the basis of written and cartographic sources, also pointing to methods of their identification, and finally presenting the results of contemporary field verification.
