English willow pattern ware from archaeological excavations in Gdańsk

Joanna Dąbal

Abstract

Urban archaeological excavations reveal numerous raw materials, including ceramics. Nevertheless, existing studies scarcely pay attention to 19th- and 20th-century ceramics. The article discusses a small sample of printed English pearlware and whiteware. The article presents fourteen English dishes (plates, saucers, a platter and a bowl) decorated with printed Willow pattern, excavated in varied Gdańsk archaeological sites between the years 2010 and 2016. Collected sherds were basis for the analysis of the origin and form of the depicted decoration. Excavated ceramic data is also a valuable source for the further discussion on the aestethic preferences of the city habitants and the accesibility of such merchandise and English pottery trade in general. The small number of the dishes analyzed precluded wider generalizations; nevertheless it can be preliminary assumed that willow pattern ware did not constitute a substantial share of imports of English pottery to Gdańsk local market. Most of the dishes discussed were dated to the second quarter of the 19th-century, only a few were dated to the late 19th–early 20th-century. These findings provide some initial guidance as to the future research in written sources. The article also emphasis that 19th- and 20th-century raw materials excavated in Gdańsk have not been researched well so far, which makes it diffi cult to present a wider analyses and comparisions of these ceramics in the context of the whole historical city.
