Review process

Authors submitting manuscripts to Archaeological Review agree that their work will undergo a peer-review process.

The procedures for the acceptance and review of manuscripts submitted to Archaeological Review follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

All submitted manuscripts are first evaluated by the Editorial Team, which assesses them for formal and substantive correctness. The Editorial Team reserves the right to reject a manuscript at this initial stage if it does not meet the journal’s editorial standards. Acceptance of a manuscript for the review process is conditional upon a written declaration that the text has not been previously published and is not under consideration by any other journal.

At the next stage, manuscripts are sent to two anonymous reviewers, specialists in the relevant field, who are not members of the Editorial Team or the Editorial Committee. The journal operates a double-blind peer-review process, which is confidential and mutually anonymous. Reviewers are not permitted to use any information obtained through the review process prior to publication of the paper. The final decision to accept or reject a manuscript rests with the Editorial Team.

The review form includes questions concerning both the content and the form of the manuscript.

  • Is the subject matter original?

  • Does the manuscript make an innovative contribution to its field?

  • Does it present the current state of research adequately?

  • Is the source literature up to date and sufficient?

  • Are the theoretical aims, research methods, interpretation and conclusions coherent?

Form

  • Is the narrative clear and well structured?

  • Is the language correct and appropriate for an academic publication?

  • Does the manuscript comply with the journal’s editorial guidelines?

  • Is the graphic material (tables, figures, illustrations) an integral and justified part of the argument?

Overall evaluation

On the basis of the above criteria, the reviewer issues an overall recommendation:

  1. The manuscript may be published in its present form.

  2. The manuscript may be published after minor revisions.

  3. The manuscript may be published after major revisions.

  4. The manuscript is not suitable for publication.

The Editorial Team reserves the right to propose changes based on its own assessment and on the reviewers’ comments. It also makes the final decision regarding acceptance of a manuscript for publication. After final acceptance, the text undergoes further editorial work and proofreading.
