Abstract

This paper contributes to the discussion around two wooden masks from Opole that was recently reopened by Kamil Kajkowski (2021). The prime objective of this polemic voice is to draw attention to the study methodology and interpretation-building processes applied to archaeological sources in cases like the Opole masks, which are used as a base for recognizing traditional pre-Christian beliefs and reconstructing elements of associated rites. This questions in turn a study of past sacrum that is carried forth from a modern cultural perspective and applying a contemporary rationality.
